Security with Auto Unlock

This article concerns:
  • Smart Lock
  • Opener
  • Smart Door

Auto Unlock unlocks your door automatically when you approach your home. Your smartphone remains in your pocket. That sounds very convenient, but is this feature also safe? In this article, you will find answers to the most common security concerns.

Other Smartphones

Could any other smartphone open my door automatically?
No. Auto Unlock will only be triggered by a smartphone with permission to do so. Your door will unlock only when you or someone you have given permission to is approaching your home.

Moving around my home

What happens when I move around in my home? Will Auto Unlock open my door?
No. Your door stays securely locked when you move within your home. Auto Unlock works by combining GPS (Geofences), Bluetooth and movement data. With the GPS on your smartphone, Nuki recognizes when you leave your home. The Geofence is a virtual fence drawn around this location. This is at least 100 meters in size (radius). The next Auto Unlock will only be triggered when you exit the Geofence and enter it again. If this size is too small for your home, you can change the size of the Geofence.

Sleeping

Can I be sure that my door will remain closed while I sleep?
Yes. See question above: You need to exit the Geofence (min. 100m radius) and enter it again to trigger Auto Unlock. For even more security, we created Night Mode. When Night Mode is active, you can turn on a setting that will cause your Smart Lock or Smart Door to reject all Auto Unlocks.

Being away

Could an Auto Unlock be triggered when I am away?
No. Auto Unlock works by combining GPS, Bluetooth and Geofences (iBeacons). To make the feature even more secure, you do not only need to exit and enter the Geofence again (min. 100 m radius). The app also needs to establish a Bluetooth connection to your Smart Lock or Smart Door. Your Nuki device's Bluetooth range is about 10 meters, so you need to come as close as this.

Driving by my home or entering the building

What happens if I walk or drive by my home or when I only enter my apartment building but want my flat door to remain closed?
As stated above, you need to exit and enter the Geofence again (min. 100 m radius). When you then come as close as 10 meters, an Auto Unlock could be triggered. Doors, walls and other interference can reduce this range. You could use the option to delay Auto Unlock. Then, Nuki only opens your door when the Bluetooth signal is strong. We advise you to test the Auto Unlock feature for your specific use case while checking the activity log.

Coming home with the family

How does Auto Unlock open the door when I come home with my family?
Auto Unlock will open your door only once. If, within two minutes, several smartphones send Auto Unlock requests to the Nuki device, only the first Auto Unlock opens your door.

Intercept and replay

Can someone intercept an Auto Unlock command like from a remote car key and replay it later?
No. The challenge-response procedure prevents this. Each command has an individual key that can only be used once. Both devices must know this key. A command will be rejected if an incorrect or previously used key is transmitted.

Checking Auto Unlock actions

Where can I check whether my door has been opened automatically?
The activity log tracks every action performed by your Smart Lock, Smart Door or Opener.

Data management

How does Nuki manage my data?
Information about your smartphone's location is only processed locally on your smartphone. The location of your Nuki device is only stored on the end device itself. When using Nuki Web, it is also synchronized to the Nuki servers.
