- Which Smart Lock do I have?
With the Keypad 2 NFC, you can use codes and fingerprints, as well as the new "Tap to Unlock" feature. Simply unlock your Smart Lock by tapping your phone or watch on the Keypad. But how exactly does Tap to Unlock work? What do you need to use it? This article answers the most important questions about our newest Nuki Keypad.
About Tap to Unlock & the two modes
How does the “Tap to Unlock” feature work?
It works similarly to your NFC bank card in your wallet app, using secure storage methods. Simply hold your smartphone on the Keypad 2 NFC and it will unlock your Smart Lock. What you already know as “tap to pay” for payments will become “Tap to Unlock” for your Smart Lock access.
How can I use Tap to Unlock?
We offer two modes for Tap to Unlock: The Smart Home Mode and the Nuki App Mode. The main difference is: With the Nuki App Mode you only need the Nuki App. However, you have to unlock your phone each time before tapping. With the Smart Home Mode, your phone can even stay locked. However, you need a Smart Home system. A mixed mode is not possible. See this comparison of our modes.
About the Smart Home Mode
What do I need to use Tap to Unlock in Smart Home Mode?
Currently, Smart Home Mode works with Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings.
In addition to a Nuki Smart Lock and the Keypad 2 NFC, you need a brand-specific smartphone or smartwatch and Smart Home hub that supports digital home keys. Read this Keypad 2 NFC setup article to learn more about the details, including a list of compatible devices.
What is Aliro?
Aliro is a new communication protocgraz scol and credential standard for access control. It was developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the same group behind the Matter smart home standard. Aliro is based on various technologies, including Near Field Communication (NFC). Aliro is device-independent and works with a wide variety of user devices.
About Usage & Users
Do I need to unlock my mobile device or open the Nuki App?
You don’t need to open the Nuki App.
In Nuki App Mode, however, you must unlock your phone before tapping it on the Keypad.
With the Smart Home Mode, you can keep your phone locked: Simply adjust the settings for your home key in your Wallet App accordingly (i.e., use Express Mode for iOS).
Of course, you can use two-factor authentication, i.e., Face ID, Touch ID, or a code, if you prefer a higher security level.
How do I invite other users to Tap to Unlock?
If you select the Nuki App Mode, all users with a Nuki App permission for your Smart Lock will be able to use Tap to Unlock.
If you select the Smart Home Mode, you will need to add users via your Smart Home app. If you are using iOS, you can only add other iOS users. If you are using a Samsung device, you can only add Samsung users.
For more information, please refer to the instructions in your Smart Home app.
You can always add Keypad codes and fingerprints for new users via the Nuki App.
