Initial setup of your Smart Lock

To set up your Smart Lock with the Nuki App, install the app on your smartphone and open it. Then, the Nuki App guides you through the required steps.

1) Connect your Smart Lock with the Nuki App

You have to activate Bluetooth on your smartphone, so that the Nuki App can find the Smart Lock. When your Nuki App scans for the Smart Lock, hold down the button on the Smart Lock for 5 seconds until the LED ring is permanently glowing. Stay within Bluetooth range during the setup.

2) Select your door fitting

The Nuki Smart Lock can pull the latch and is therefore suitable for doors with handles as well as for doors with knobs or bars on the outside. In the Nuki App, you can configure whether Nuki should unlock your door or even pull the latch to open it for you.
Select your existing door fitting during the initial setup of your Smart Lock. To change the settings for your door fitting later, tap on the desired Smart Lock in the Nuki App and select "Settings" > "Features & Configuration" > "General" > "Choose door fitting".

3) Calibration

During the initial setup, the Smart Lock calibrates itself and adapts to your door. If your door is, for example, designed to be locked twice, then the Smart Lock will also lock it twice.
To re-calibrate your Smart Lock later, tap on the desired Smart Lock in the Nuki App and enter the lock settings. Then go to "Features & Configuration" > “General”. Here you can adjust whether your Smart Lock should lock once or twice and recalibrate it.

You can pair the device with the Nuki App on-site via Bluetooth:

  1. Install the Nuki App on your smartphone and open it.
  2. Select "Add new Smart Lock". Follow the instructions in the Nuki App

To prevent pairing a smartphone directly with your Smart Lock, Bluetooth pairing can be disabled. If Bluetooth pairing is disabled, you can only add new users via invitation code.

Do you have a Lift-up handle?

A lift-up handle is a lock that requires the door handle to be lifted in order to lock the door.

Nuki supports the most common variants of the lift-up handle

The Nuki Smart Lock can pull the latch and is therefore suitable for the two most common variants of the lift-up handle.

  • The door handles on the inside and outside are permanently interconnected:
If you push down the door handle on the outside, the handle on the inside of the door will also move down.
Pushing down the handle on the inside and the outside of the door releases the latch.
So you can open your unlocked door from the outside without a key.
  • The door handles on the inside and outside are not interconnected:
Only pushing down the handle on the inside of the door releases the latch.
Pushing down the door handle on the outside does not pull the door latch.
So you need a key to open your unlocked door from the outside.

Initial setup and calibration for a Lift-up handle

Door fitting
Select “Lift-up handle” as your door fitting during the initial setup of your Smart Lock.

Note: In the Nuki App, you can configure whether Nuki should only unlock your door or even pull the latch to open the door for you. To adjust this setting, answer the question in the Nuki App if you need a key to open your unlocked door.

Calibration
During the initial setup, the Smart Lock calibrates itself and adapts to your door. To calibrate your Smart Lock, make sure the door is unlocked but closed. In an additional step, you will be asked to lift up the handle.

Feature limitations for a Lift-up handle

The Nuki Smart Lock is a key-turner, which means it turns the key to lock or unlock the door. However, the Smart Lock cannot lift up the door handle.
That means your Nuki Smart Lock can only lock your door if you have lifted the handle. This has to be considered for all features of the Smart Lock that include locking your door.

The Nuki App keeps you informed!

Your Smart Lock recognizes if the door handle has not been lifted before locking. In the Nuki App you will get a warning notifying you that the door cannot be locked because the door handle is not in the right position. For now, there will be no retry of the action.
You will also see an error message in the activity log if the locking action could not be performed successfully because the door handle was not lifted.

If you have activated notifications, Nuki will additionally warn you via push notification on your smartphone.

These features of the Smart Lock are affected by the lift-up handle limitations:
